JELD-WEN Founder Passes Away At Age 79. Company Mourns Humanitarian and Visionary
(WINNIPEG, Manitoba) August 17, 2010 – JELD-WEN founder Richard (Dick) Wendt passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2010 from complications arising after a stroke. He founded the international window and door company in 1960 and expanded its North American operations in 1996. The company currently employs over 1,200 Canadians with manufacturing plants across the country.
In 1969, Dick began the JELD-WEN Foundation to provide funding for worthwhile endeavors in communities where JELD-WEN has operations. To date, the JELD-WEN Foundation has gifted more than $80 million dollars to worthwhile community causes.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of JELD-WEN, North American employees were challenged to donate 50 hours of volunteer time to a local, non‐profit organization. From Habitat for Humanity builds in the East to cancer relays in the West, Canadian operations jumped at the chance to help realize Wendt’s vision of community giving.
“We wanted to help Dick celebrate this milestone by giving back to the communities that have supported us,” says Chris Sheldon, Director of Marketing for JELD-WEN Canada. “These events align with his commitment to helping worthwhile charities and we’re glad that Dick had a chance to see his vision in action before his unfortunate passing.”
JELD-WEN Windows and Doors was founded in 1960 and currently employs over 1,200 Canadians. In 2003, JELD‐WEN consolidated their 27 brands under a single product identity. It is now one of the largest manufacturers of windows and doors with locations in 22 countries and more than 20,000 employees worldwide. Learn more at www.jeld-wen.ca.
