answers

1. How should I evaluate the energy performance of a window?

Look for products that are certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or the National Fenestration Ratings Council (NFRC), this includes testing the U value which corresponds to the thermal resistance of a window. You can also look for labels on the window itself. For more valuable information on energy efficiency in windows visit: www.energystar.gc.ca or www.csa-international.org

2. What does it mean to have a “clad” window?

The word clad refers to the covering on the exterior of a window or patio door unit. From the inside you can admire the beauty of the wood, while the aluminum clad shell on the outside protects the life of your wood windows for many years.

3. Can old-style windows be custom made?

Absolutely! One affordable option that also maintains the historical integrity of the home is to replace an old window with an new wood window of the same style.

4. What window material do you recommend for my house?

Window material choices vary by region. Vinyl and wood clad Windows are used most frequently. However you should verify with a national building code which materials are most appropriate for your area.

5. What is “low-E”?

Low-E or low emissivity glass has a special coating that reflects UV rays. This type of glass will help to keep heat out in the summer, while keeping heat in during the winter. Helping to reduce your overall energy bills.

6. What is the reason for injecting gas into double paned windows?

The gas used is denser than air, which improves the insulation.

6. What is the reason for injecting gas into double paned windows?

The gas used is denser than air, which improves the insulation.

7. If I install the window myself, am I still protected by the warranty?

Of course! The warranty will apply as long as the installation was well carried out. If you are installing Windows for the first time we suggest you use the services of a Professional. Don’t hesitate to consult our installation guide.

    Hi,
My name is Mike, and my parents live in a condominium apt. which part of a building that needs plenty of renovations. Do you have any cleaning/volunteering programs to promote a clean environment in buildings specially in Toronto? Example the Islington and Dixon Rd. corridor? Those basements are scary (and dirtly like in a third world country) and extremelly dusty, and the birds frequent on those high rise buildings.
    Something needs to be done.
What may you suggest? Isn’t Toronto suppose to be a clean city with clean buildings?
    Mike

  • JELD-WEN

    Dear Mike,

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, JELD-WEN does not have such a program. We would encourage you to speak to your burrough council members to begin with. Calling out elected officials and making them aware of the situation made lead to action.
