Natural Resources Canada will be implementing new criteria for its ENERGY STAR windows and doors category on October 1st, 2010. These new higher performance levels for windows and doors have been put in place by NRCan and are a result of efforts to keep ENERGY STAR qualified products in the top 25% of all products available on the market today, from an energy efficiency standpoint.
Over the last few years, provincial governments across Canada have raised the minimum energy requirements for windows and doors within their energy codes. For all intents and purposes, the performance level of ENERGY STAR qualified products was being required by many provincial regulations. It became time for NRCan to increase the minimum requirements for ENERGY STAR if it was to maintain its objective of representing the top 25% in energy efficient products.
Essentially, these new criteria have moved the 4 Canadian Climate Zones up one level. What currently qualifies for Zone A, B and C will most likely only qualify for Zone A and B under this new criteria. For example, this means that in Northern Ontario which lies in Zone C, product that was currently qualified for Northern Ontario will now only qualify for Southern Ontario, in Zone B.
Other changes that are now part of the new ENERGY STAR requirements include mandatory IGU (Insulated glass unit) certification, structural testing to the standard and mandatory labelling. These new changes will be beneficial to the consumer as they are aimed at increasing traceability and helping consumers make educated choices.
